Variations on a Theme

Art in the Schools, an Garden City Art aRound Town program that provides an extended arts experience to students of Garden City, has recently completed its inaugural art program.

The three-day workshop entitled “Variations on a Theme,” was organized into three different series.

The first workshop included discussion on the topic of students' favorite things, along with developing descriptive words which students later used on their final day. On watercolor paper, students created a crayon drawing and proceeded to paint a watercolor wash over their design.

The second workshop consisted of an exploration of line through an etching project. Crayon was applied to the watercolor paper for the base color and a mixture of black tempera paint with soap was applied over the entire paper and etched into with a tool.

On the final day, students composed a list of descriptive words, on watercolor paper, to create a poem. The three pieces of artwork were then matted and placed in a black frame. This workshop was funded by a grant from The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.

Bloom Where You're Planted Flower Pots

What does that mean, you ask?
This is the idea that we are in a wonderful place where we are planted here in Garden City and we need to tend our “garden”.

It is important to put our focus in our community so that we can BLOOM. And what better way to help us BLOOM and grow than through art, with exploration and appreciation and cultural development.

Garden City Art aRound Town chose this slogan for our motto as a way to encourage community growth and beautiful BLOOMS!
