Art in the Schools, an Garden City Art aRound Town program that provides an extended arts experience to students of Garden City, has recently completed its inaugural art program.
The three-day workshop entitled “Variations on a Theme,” was organized into three different series.
The first workshop included discussion on the topic of students' favorite things, along with developing descriptive words which students later used on their final day. On watercolor paper, students created a crayon drawing and proceeded to paint a watercolor wash over their design.
The second workshop consisted of an exploration of line through an etching project. Crayon was applied to the watercolor paper for the base color and a mixture of black tempera paint with soap was applied over the entire paper and etched into with a tool.
On the final day, students composed a list of descriptive words, on watercolor paper, to create a poem. The three pieces of artwork were then matted and placed in a black frame. This workshop was funded by a grant from The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.
